Advertising Federation of Louisville honors Bernard M. Trager with Louisvillian of the Year Award
Award is oldest of its kind in Kentucky
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – (May 31, 2011) – The Advertising Federation of Louisville (AdFed) is pleased to announce Bernard M. Trager as the recipient of its 2011 Louisvillian of the Year award. Trager will receive his award at a luncheon in his honor on Friday, July 15 at The Olmsted in Louisville, Ky.
First bestowed in 1951, the AdFed’s Louisvillian of the Year award is the oldest of its kind in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This outstanding achievement is given to publicly recognize an individual’s generous personal contributions to the Louisville community in the areas of civic, educational, or business progress in recent years.
A panel of past honorees selects the winner. University of Louisville president James R. Ramsey was recognized as the 2010 Louisvillian of the Year. Previous honorees include: Alice K. Houston, Mary Bingham, Stan Curtis, Muhammad Ali, Tom Jurich, Ulysses Bridgeman, Jr. and Mary H. Griffith.
Louisville native Bernard M. Trager is chairman and founder of Republic Bancorp, Inc., the parent company of Republic Bank & Trust Company and Republic Bank, which has 43 banking centers in Kentucky, Indiana, Florida and Ohio. Republic Bancorp, Inc. has $3.4 billion in assets and $1 billion in trust assets under custody and management.
Trager is an adopted alumnus of the University of Louisville, as well as a member and former chairman of the University of Louisville Board of Overseers. He is a former director of the following organizations: Fund for the Arts, the Cathedral Heritage Foundation, Greater Louisville Inc./The Metro Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, Louisville Community Foundation, Louisville/Jefferson County Redevelopment Authority, and Health Enterprises Network.
No stranger to local accolades, Trager was named Professional Entrepreneur of the Year by Louisville’s Entrepreneur Society, is an honorary member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame. He is also a recipient of the Grover Sales Distinguished Alumni Award from Louisville Male High School and is a member of the Louisville Male High School Hall of Fame.
In 1999 Trager and Jean, his wife of 56 years, received the National Conference of Community and Justice (NCCJ) Weisberg Brotherhood Award. In 2003 they were named Caritas Foundation Community Leaders of the Year and in 2004 they were honored with the University of Louisville Hickman-Camp Award, recognizing their support of the athletic department. Most recently, Mr. and Mrs. Trager received the 2006 Blanche B. Ottenheimer Award from the Jewish Community Center for their outstanding service to the community of Louisville.
